Department of Energy - Research Centers
DOE's laboratories and technology centers house world-class facilities where more than 30,000 scientists & engineers perform cutting-edge research.
National Laboratories
Ames National Laboratory
Argonne National Laboratory
Brookhaven National Laboratory - The Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory conducts research in the physical, biomedical, and environmental sciences, as well as in energy technologies. Brookhaven also builds and operates major facilities available to university, industrial, and government scientists. The Laboratory is managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, a limited liability company founded by Stony Brook University and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.
Fermi National Laboratory
Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory - Ernest Orlando Lawrence founded this Lab, the oldest of the national laboratories, in 1931. Lawrence invented the cyclotron, which led to a Golden Age of particle physics and revolutionary discoveries about the nature of the universe. Known as a mecca of particle physics, Berkeley Lab long ago broadened its focus. Of our nine Nobel Prizes, five are in physics and four in chemistry. Today, we are a multiprogram lab where research in advanced materials, life sciences, energy efficiency, detectors and accelerators serves America's needs in technology and the environment.
Berkeley Lab is located on the hillside above one of the world's great universities -- the University of California at Berkeley. Altogether, we have some 4,000 employees, of which about 800 are students. Each year, the Lab also hosts more than 2,000 participating guests. We are managed by the University of California for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory - Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) is a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory operated by the University of California. LLNL was founded in September 1952 as a second nuclear weapons design laboratory to promote innovation in the design of our nation's nuclear stockpile through creative science and engineering. Livermore has also become one of the world's premier scientific centers, where cutting-edge science and engineering in the interest of national security is used to break new ground in other areas of national importance, including energy, biomedicine, and environmental science.
Los Alamos National Laboratory
National Energy Technology Center
National Renewable Energy Laboratory
Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory
Sandia National Laboratory
Since 1949, Sandia National Laboratories has developed science-based technologies that support our national security. Today, over 272 million Americans depend on Sandia's technology solutions to solve national and global threats to peace and freedom.
Through science and technology, people, infrastructure, and partnerships, Sandia's mission is to meet national needs in four key areas:
Nuclear weapons — ensuring the stockpile is safe, secure, reliable, and can support the United States' deterrence policy
Nonproliferation and materials control — reducing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, the threat of nuclear accidents, and the potential for damage to the environment
Energy and critical infrastructure — enhancing the surety of energy and other critical infrastructures
Emerging threats — addressing new threats to national security
Sandia is a government-owned/contractor operated (GOCO) facility. Lockheed Martin manages Sandia for the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration. We seek collaborative partnerships on emerging technologies that support our mission.
